Art | The Menil Collection

The Menil Collection is located between family homes in a quiet residential neighborhood in Houston. It includes collected art of John and Dominique de Menial, who had the idea to build a museum to house their collection. One of the exhibitions is about previous sketches and studies of Picasso, which he did in preparation of painting his most famous artworks.

Renzo Piano was the architect for the museum. He designed the building in a way to seem 'large on the inside but small on the outside'. Especially the shade construction is very interesting. To protect the artwork from the bright Texas sun, Renzo Piano developed special ceiling louvres. The inside of the building is only indirectly lit by the sunlight.
