- Austin, Texas
- This 1,100 square foot building, originally built in 1943 as a private residence, has operated as a retail storefront on Kerbey Lane since the early 1970’s. The conversion into an architectural design office sought to preserve and highlight some of the unique qualities of residential buildings built in the first half of the 20th century. The long leaf pine ceiling joists are exposed and serve as a light source to illuminate the main workspace. The shiplap discovered behind old wallpaper was revealed to be mostly reclaimed boards from previously demolished structures. These boards were exposed when possible to demonstrate the unique character of the building. Building systems were updated and windows were replaced to meet current energy code, but the building’s envelope maintains the original scale and character of the once residential street.
